Guest Sticky – Cartoonism Heredity?
Got to thinking about my first memories of drawing. When I reached my earliest one, I came to a day at my grandma’s house drawing with my Uncle Mike. I remember we were looking at the comics in the Sunday paper, and I remember wanting to create a character so bad. But I couldn’t get my hand to draw what my mind created, at least not in any acceptable form. I seem to retain that quality to this very day.
Well, I happen to have the piece of paper that he drew on that day about 25 years ago. I don’t know how this is possible, but it is.
Somehow, that piece of paper stayed within my possession through grade school, junior high, a move to Gram’s house my junior year, the move to my parents’ house the next year, and then four different college dorm rooms and the moves to and from home each summer, three separate apartments, including the near infamous Blue House, where sometimes you’d wonder if you could find the front door, let alone a 20 year old piece of paper, and finally, the move to Chicago.
So, nearly 25 years and 1,000 miles (give or take) later…my first memory of what drawing was remains intact.
